Hunters Checklist
For your safety and comfort we highly recommend that you bring the following items on your elk or mule deer hunt:
- Bring clothing for cold, warm, or wet weather. The Fall season out here can be dry and warm. Bring layered clothing so you'll be able to adjust to the weather. There is no blaze orange law here in New Mexico, it is strictly your choice if you want to wear it. Please make sure you do bring your camo clothing to hunt in.
- Boots with heels are needed so your feet won't go thru a stirrup on a saddle. Don't bring cowboy boots. I wear Rocky Bear Claws, they work fine in stirrups.
- You'll also need a small day pack/fanny pack to carry your flashlight, extra batteries, camera/camcorder and waterproof matches.
- You will also need to bring a hunting knife and compass/gps just in case you get separated from your guide.
- You will also need a good set of binoculars.
- Please bring your toiletry items, warm sleeping bag, clothes, gloves.
- Bow or muzzleloader hunters have your full camo gear, face net, and wind detection powder.
- For the kill, you will need elk quarter bags or 4 quality deer bags.
- Duffle bag for your gear to pack-in (the duffle bag does not have to contain your sleeping bag).
- Rifles and muzzleloaders will go to camp in rifle scabbards (not hard cases). Please pack your powder and bullets in your duffle. Bows are the only thing packed in hard cases so make sure you bowhunters have one.
- You will need to purchase your habitat and access validation stamps which you can purchase online at the New Mexico Game and Fish website.
SPECIAL NOTE: If hunters are coming in pairs please have all the bags equal in weight within a couple of lbs. Please remember the weight limit is 70 lbs per person (not including bows or guns). Most hunters in the past have not exceeded 50 lbs.
